Defensive Driving Course (DDC)

Aims

To provide participants with the knowledge and skills to safely drive and maintain this type of vehicle

Objectives

By actively participating in this course students will be able to:

  • Have an appreciation of the relevant health and safety legislation
  • Drive the vehicle safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and accepted good practice
  • Carry out a pre-shift inspection
  • Be able to drive safely under varying conditions
  • Be able to carry out minor adjustments and routine service
  • Have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to successfully complete the course assessment

Course Content

  • Statutory Regulations: The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Use of handbook and other information sources including legislation and Approved Codes of Practice
  • Country safety traffic regulations and conditions
  • Journey management
  • Basic construction, names of components, purpose and function of components, controls and gauges
  • Defensive Driving, encompassing:
  • What is defensive driving, why drive defensively definition of a hazard, what is a hazard, seat belts and SRS and airbags, actual danger, potential danger, hazard awareness, safe driving vision scanning, what can be seen, blind spots, mirror signal manoeuvre, space control, common cause of accidents, distractions, stopping distances
  • Pre-use, starts, running checks and close down procedures
  • Passengers and cargo, moving off, use of gears, acceleration, speed, distance, road junctions, roundabouts, driving in lanes, overtaking, other road users, pedestrians, positioning, hazard awareness, observation skills, anticipation, system of vehicle control, stopping, reversing & parking
  • Course assessment which includes theory & practical elements
